The Greek word Meraki means to do something with passion, from the heart, with absolute devotion, with undivided attention; a labor of love,
I can't think of a better word to describe how I approach my practice of Traditional Medicine. Whether I'm using needles, herbal preparation, cups, moxibustion or words, my intention is always to come from the Heart with unconditional positive regard. I believe this to be a necessary ingredient in any therapeutic relationship.
When you come through the door of my treatment rooms, I hope you experience Meraki medicine.
I have spent my working life focused on helping people recognize and actualize their potential. After 15 years working in the Mental Health field, I made a sea change and began my training in Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) at the Desert Institute of Healing Arts, learning Zen Shiatsu in 1994. I became so intrigued by Chinese Medicine, particularly Five Elements, I decided to learn Traditional Acupuncture. I studied with Dianne Connelly and Robert Duggan at TAI SOPHIA in Columbia, MD, (now the Maryland University of Integrative Health) and Chinese Herbal Medicine with Ted Kaptchuk, author of the seminal work, The Web That Has No Weaver. I have also studied Constitutional Facial Acupuncture with Mary Elizabeth Wakefield, Islamic Medicine with Dr. Feroz Osman-Latib, and Auricular Medicine with Dr. Raphael Nogier. All of these experiences inform my current practice of TEAM.
While running a Community Acupuncture clinic in Anchorage, I also taught a Master of Acupuncture program at the Alaska Institute of Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture and Massage Therapy.
My medicine has taken me around the world, from York, Pennsylvania to the bush country of New South Wales, Australia, the Panjshir Valley, Afghanistan and north to Alaska. Now in my third decade of practice, I'm still enthralled by the wisdom of this ancient medicine and what it has to offer the modern world.
When you come for your first visit, you will complete an intake form. We will then have a conversation about your treatment goals and the treatment process. I encourage folks to have that initial conversation on the phone before coming, so that i can answer any questions about the process. I will perform a preliminary physical exam which will include reading your pulses, looking at your tongue and abdominal palpation.
If you've not had acupuncture or it has been a long time since your last treatment, I will generally recommend what I call a "clearing treatment." This treatment consists of a series of needles inserted on the back halfway between the spine and the inner border of the shoulder blade. It's a very relaxing treatment with often dramatic effects. The needles I use are single use sterile disposable needles and they are inserted very superficially into the skin. I use an insertion tube which spreads the skin and allows for painless insertion. The treatment takes anywhere from 45-90 minutes.
Follow up treatments can take anywhere from 20-60 minutes. Treatments will be based on previous response to treatment and pulse readings for full body acupuncture and on electrical detection of ear points for auricular acupuncture.
Our bodies are quite adept at repairing themselves. I use methods that aid that natural ability with modalities like acupuncture, acupressure, nutrition, moxibustion, cupping.and gua sha. You can learn more about each modality on the Services page.
